In a decision like college that can feel larger-than-life, it’s so important to ask good questions. The right questions will help you uncover and understand your values, your concerns, your blindspots, and your hopes.

Questions to ask yourself when considering college with your student


  • What do I look forward to about my student attending college?


  • What is a fear I have as I consider this transition?


  • What was my own college experience like (if you had one)?

    • Do I hope my student’s experience is similar or different?


  • What have I recently discovered about Biola that stands out to me?


  • How did my student hear about Biola?

    • Was it a specific person? What is that person like?


  • As I’ve watched my student grow up, what talents and passions stand out?


  • What other Universities are on the list?

    • How do I feel the student population at those institutions will impact my son/daughter?

    • Do we plan to visit those colleges?

    • If we’ve been to their campuses, what feelings did we have when we were there?

    • Do I believe my student will get the classes and support they need to complete their degree?

    • Is it my student’s goal to complete their degree in four years?


  • Have I had an opportunity to interact with faculty or leadership?

    • If so, what stood out to me about that interaction?


  • What type of courses am I curious about at Biola?


  • If I were to attend college, what would I be looking for?

    • How might that be the same or different from my student?


  • Does my student have interest in music, theater, intramurals, ministry or other extra-curriculars?

    • How could these things, in addition to classes, help them grow and gain connections?


  • What do I know about Southern California? What is my impression of it?

    • Where have I visited?

    • Do I know anyone in the area?

    • Do I know what resources (healthcare, job opportunities, etc.) are available for my student to utilize in the area?


  • What does our family value in a local church and where might my student get plugged in?


  • Are there any roadblocks as we consider our student’s college decision?


  • Have we had a chance to speak with a current student?


  • Who do I hope my student becomes when they have graduated college?
